Summer Law Internship Program - 2019 Interns

A mandatory orientation for all interns will be held on Thursday, May 30 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Memphis City Council Chambers on the first floor of 125 N. Main St. in downtown Memphis.  At the orientation you will receive information about how to successfully complete the Summer Law Intern Program and will meet with a representative of the workplace to which you have been assigned.  Lunch will be provided.  If you cannot attend the orientation due to a previous commitment, please ask a parent or other adult to attend and get the materials on your behalf.

The program begins June 3 and runs until June 28.  During that time, you are required to work a total of 60 hours and attend group activities each Friday (June 7, 14, 21, and 28).  The schedule of when you work will be determined by you and the workplace to which you have been assigned.  Information about the group activities will be provided at the orientation.

 

Group Activities

Friday, June 7 - Tennessee Bureau of Investigation

For this outing, dress comfortably (business casual, no heels) as we will be standing/walking for at least one hour.  Arrive early if possible so we can leave on time. Bring your signed timesheet (or email a scanned copy to slip@memphisbar.org.)

  • 9:15am - meet at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library
  • 9:30am - bus leaves for TBI
  • 12:00pm - bus returns to library

 

Friday, June 14 - Negotiation & Panel Discussion

This week you'll participate in an interactive negotiation exercise and then hear from a panel of lawyers on why they chose law as a career, among other topics. 

  • 12:30pm - check in at the C Level Auditorium at One Commerce Square (40 S. Main Street on the corner of Main & Monroe in the downtown area)
  •  4:00pm - dismissal

 

Friday, June 21

This week you'll tour the University of Memphis Cecil C Humphreys Law School (bring your parent/guardian!), participate in a mock law class and then a Q & A session followed by a college fair.  Lunch will be provided.

  • 11:20: Check In
  • 11:30: Tour of Cecil C. Humphrey’s School of Law
  • 12:00 – 12:10: Grab lunch and a seat
  • 12:15: Mock law class
  • 1:00: Guardians and parents attend two separate Q&A’s. Guardians attend one on Scholarships / Financial Aid. Interns attend Q&A on attending law school from former students.
  • 2:00 - 3:30: College Fair

 

Friday, June 28

This week's activity will be held in the Judge D'Army Bailey Shelby County Courthouse, 140 Adams Ave.  

  • 8:30: Meet in the Supreme Court Courtroom on the 3rd floor of the Courthouse,  you will be divided into groups to visit various divisions of Circuit Court and sit in on the proceedings.
  • 11:00: Return to the Supreme Court Courtroom for a debriefing session and lunch.  
  • 12:00: Dismissed.

Timesheets
