by Annie Christoff, YLD President
In addition to all of the fun events we’re known for here at the YLD, we also work hard to make our members aware of opportunities for pro bono representation and community service projects, some of which you will read about in this newsletter. I’d like to take a minute to tell you (or, hopefully, remind you) about a great service that may be just about the easiest way to get involved in pro bono work I’ve seen: Online Tennessee Justice.
Online Tennessee Justice, or OnlineTNJustice.org, is the brainchild of the Tennessee Alliance for Legal Services and the TBA. It’s a website where qualified, low-income clients can go to post legal questions or seek advice, and volunteer attorneys can review those questions, choose the ones they feel comfortable addressing, and answer them anonymously online. You can log on any time, you’re in full control of the issues you want to respond to, and there is no commitment to take on longer-term representation or even answer follow-up questions. It is, quite simply, the least intimidating way to get started in pro bono service. To make the deal even sweeter, you can earn ethics CLE credit (up to one hour for every five hours of pro bono work provided). read more
Flight Restaurant A Success; Post-Bar Exam Happy Hour July 31
by Maggie Cooper & Christina Kurdilla, Social Committee Co-Chairs
The YLD calendar is heating up with a summer full of events! On July 11, we held a well-attended Triple Threat CLE and happy hour at Flight Restaurant. Our friends at Insight Discovery, LLC sponsored the event, which had a great turnout! Next, on July 31, we will host a post-bar exam party at Aldo’s Pizza Pies downtown on Main Street, featuring food specials and free drinks until the bar tab runs dry! Please join us in a “cheers” to the 3Ls finishing the bar!
Finally, grab your socks and get ready to bowl! On August 22, we will hold our annual Bowling Night at Billy Hardwick’s All-Star Lanes in East Memphis from 6-8 p.m. Thanks to the sponsorship of Counsel on Call, the cost for MBA members will be $5/person, which includes shoe rental and 2 hours of bowling. We’ll also provide beverages while the tab lasts. Last year, the event sold out quickly, so start getting your teams together! More details on registration to follow!

Mark Your Calendar for Access to Justice Saturday, October 12
by Nicole M. Grida & Jonathan Nelson, Public Service Committee Co-Chairs
On April 23, 2013, the Young Lawyers’ Division coordinated the Annual Legal Lines Event held at WREG-TV by staffing a total of seven (7) phone lines for 2.5 hours and providing free legal advice to the News Channel 3 viewing area. Usually held during Law Week each year, the YLD was asked to hold this event a week earlier in light of the television station’s schedule. As usual, the phones began ringing off the hook as soon as the event began and did not stop until well after the conclusion of the event. This year a total of 30 local attorneys, including members of the YLD, manned the phone lines. Callers who had questions that could not be easily answered by volunteer attorneys were referred to other local agencies. As always News Channel 3 promoted Legal Lines in the weeks leading up to the event, and several callers stated they had to call and call to get through. Legal questions ranged from simple personal injury matters and concerns regarding domestic issues such as divorce and child support to complicated real estate and probate matters. We would like to thank all the attorneys who volunteered for this worthwhile event.
Be sure to mark your calendar for YLD day at the Access to Justice Saturday Legal Clinic on Saturday, October 12, 2013, from 10:00 a.m. until noon at the main library at 3030 Poplar Avenue. Dozens of volunteers will be needed!
