President’s Update

by Abby Webb, YLD President

Looking back on the last year, I am happy to say that I think the YLD has gotten a lot of things accomplished including another successful mock trial tournament, fun happy hours, Legal Lines, bowling night, the Redbirds game with the law school, informative CLEs, and our Annual Golf Tournament. I must admit that while I was involved in all of these events, it was really the individual board members and committees that brought them together. I would like to say thank you to each of my board members for taking their time and energy away from work, family, and friends over the past year to better the YLD of the MBA. Further, thanks to all the lawyers who volunteered and participated in our events, without you they would not have been worth all of our energy.
As my term comes to an end, I am honored to be nominated to run for what we young lawyers like to call the “Big Board.” I am hopeful that I will be elected and can keep my momentum of involvement and dedication to this organization going. I will always look back upon my involvement in the YLD fondly and hope that generations of lawyers for years to come have the same great experience.

YLD members will gather at Alfred's on Beale on Thursday, November 15th from 4:30-7:30 pm for the YLD Annual Meeting and Elections, featuring live music, light dinner, and drinks. Those on the ballot this year include Jake Dickerson, who is running unopposed for YLD Vice President/President-Elect, and the candidates for the 9 seats on the Board of the Directors, who are Nicole Bermel, Maggie Cooper, Nicole Grida, Christina Kurdilla, Irwin Magevney, Matt May, Jonathan Nelson, Keisha Moses Richardson, Jennifer Sutch, and Janika White. The nominees for the Chancellor Charles A. Rond Memorial Award honoring the Outstanding Judge of the Year are Chancellor Kenny W. Armstrong, Shelby County Chancery Court, Part III; Chief Judge Jon P. McCalla U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee; and Judge John R. McCarroll, Shelby County Circuit Court, Division I. To learn more about all of the candidates and to vote absentee if you will not be able to make it to the meeting on November 15th, click here.

Judges McCalla, McCarroll & Chancellor Armstrong Up for Rond Award

In 1976, the MBA Young Lawyers Division established an annual award to be given to the outstanding Judge in Shelby County, Tenn., in honor of the late Chancellor Charles A. Rond. Chancellor Rond was known for his intelligence, fairness, wise decisions, integrity and great wit. Last year’s recipient was Circuit Court Judge Jerry Stokes. This year the award will be presented at the Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting, Thursday, November 15th. Chief Judge Jon P. McCalla of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee; Judge John R. McCarroll of Shelby County Circuit Court, Division I; and Chancellor Kenny W. Armstrong of Shelby County Chancery Court, Part III, have been nominated for the 2012 award. Now, it’s up to you to make the final decision and vote for the most deserving judge when you vote in the 2012 YLD elections.

YLD To Sponsor Saturday Legal Clinic
on November 10th

by Nicole M. Grida & Jonathan Nelson, Public Service Committee Co-Chairs

The Young Lawyers Division is pleased to announce that it will sponsor the Saturday Legal Clinic on November 10, 2012. In conjunction with Memphis Area Legal Services, the Clinic is held every second Saturday of the month at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library located at 3030 Poplar Avenue. This monthly event provides members of the community who cannot afford to retain an attorney the opportunity to meet with a volunteer attorney to discuss their legal issues.
The Clinic will open for applicants at 10:00 a.m. and stop intake at around 12:30 p.m. Accordingly, we are looking for attorneys to volunteer on Saturday October 8, 2011 from 9:45 a.m. until approximately 12:45 p.m. or any time in between. Please note that no prior pro bono experience is needed to assist at the Clinic.
If you are interested in volunteering for the Saturday Legal Clinic or would like additional information, please email Nicole ( or Jonathan ( to get our on volunteer list.

Nuts & Bolts of Practice for New Attorneys

by Keisha Richardson & Janika White, CLE Committee Co-Chairs

Attention new attorneys! The MBA Young Lawyers Division is presenting a new and improved version of the annual "Nuts & Bolts of Practice in Shelby County Courts" on Thursday, November 15th from 1-4 pm at the Shelby County Courthouse. The seminar will feature local attorneys and judges providing practice tips on how to navigate the clerks offices and courts, including General Sessions, Juvenile, Criminal and civil courts. The goal is to provide new attendees the tools they need to successfully practice now, solely or in a practice. Topics will include the "Dos & Don’ts of Practicing Law"; "Getting and Maintaining Client Relationships"; "General Sessions Criminal and Civil and Juvenile Court" with information on how to get appointed to these cases; and much more. Newly admitted attorneys will also have the opportunity to be sworn in before the local courts. Click here to register online now.

The September happy hour at Alchemy with the University of Memphis Law Alumni Association and Student Bar Association was a blast! Thanks to the Meeks Financial Group for sponsoring the event. In October, Gilreath & Associates sponsored a “jazz and cocktails” event at the Crescent Club following a bankruptcy CLE presented by YLD board member Irwin Magevney.

Please join us to cast your vote for next year’s YLD board and the Rond award, and enjoy live music, food and drinks with fellow members of the bar. We look forward to seeing everyone there! YLD Golf Tournament A Great Success

by Jake Dickerson & Irwin Magevney, Sports Committee Co-Chairs

On Friday, September 28th, the MBA Young Lawyers Division hosted its Annual Golf Tournament, benefiting the Downtown Porter Boys & Girls Club, at Glen Eagle Golf Course in Millington, Tenn. Sixty-four golfers enjoyed a beautiful afternoon of fun and golf, and the tournament again raised a sizeable donation for the Porter Club that will be presented to the a representative of the Club at the YLD Annual Meeting & Elections on November 15th at Alfred's. The team of Tyler Darby, Todd Williams, Michael Katzman, and Jack Sherman (pictured) took first place, and the team of Edward Bearman, Tony Forsythe, Stuart Breakstone, and Richard Dorsey finished in second place. Edd Peyton won Longest Drive, and Ashley Wathen won Closest to the Pin. To view photos from the event courtesy of Alpha Reporting Corp., click here, and the YLD could not put on this great event without the invaluable help of its numerous tournament sponsors as outlined below. Thanks to all the players and sponsors who made the event such a great success!

Thanks to the YLD Golf Tournament sponsors!
