by Abby Webb, YLD President
Looking back on the last year, I am happy to say that I think the YLD has gotten a lot of things accomplished including another successful mock trial tournament, fun happy hours, Legal Lines, bowling night, the Redbirds game with the law school, informative CLEs, and our Annual Golf Tournament. I must admit that while I was involved in all of these events, it was really the individual board members and committees that brought them together. I would like to say thank you to each of my board members for taking their time and energy away from work, family, and friends over the past year to better the YLD of the MBA. Further, thanks to all the lawyers who volunteered and participated in our events, without you they would not have been worth all of our energy.
As my term comes to an end, I am honored to be nominated to run for what we young lawyers like to call the “Big Board.” I am hopeful that I will be elected and can keep my momentum of involvement and dedication to this organization going. I will always look back upon my involvement in the YLD fondly and hope that generations of lawyers for years to come have the same great experience.

Judges McCalla, McCarroll & Chancellor Armstrong Up for Rond Award
In 1976, the MBA Young Lawyers Division established an annual award to be given to the outstanding Judge in Shelby County, Tenn., in honor of the late Chancellor Charles A. Rond. Chancellor Rond was known for his intelligence, fairness, wise decisions, integrity and great wit. Last year’s recipient was Circuit Court Judge Jerry Stokes. This year the award will be presented at the Young Lawyers Division Annual Meeting, Thursday, November 15th. Chief Judge Jon P. McCalla of the U.S. District Court for the Western District of Tennessee; Judge John R. McCarroll of Shelby County Circuit Court, Division I; and Chancellor Kenny W. Armstrong of Shelby County Chancery Court, Part III, have been nominated for the 2012 award. Now, it’s up to you to make the final decision and vote for the most deserving judge when you vote in the 2012 YLD elections.
YLD To Sponsor Saturday Legal Clinic
on November 10th
by Nicole M. Grida & Jonathan Nelson, Public Service Committee Co-Chairs
The Young Lawyers Division is pleased to announce that it will sponsor the Saturday Legal Clinic on November 10, 2012. In conjunction with Memphis Area Legal Services, the Clinic is held every second Saturday of the month at the Benjamin L. Hooks Central Library located at 3030 Poplar Avenue. This monthly event provides members of the community who cannot afford to retain an attorney the opportunity to meet with a volunteer attorney to discuss their legal issues.
The Clinic will open for applicants at 10:00 a.m. and stop intake at around 12:30 p.m. Accordingly, we are looking for attorneys to volunteer on Saturday October 8, 2011 from 9:45 a.m. until approximately 12:45 p.m. or any time in between. Please note that no prior pro bono experience is needed to assist at the Clinic.
If you are interested in volunteering for the Saturday Legal Clinic or would like additional information, please email Nicole (firstname.lastname@example.org) or Jonathan (email@example.com) to get our on volunteer list.
