Judges Needed for High School Mock Trial Competition, Feb. 16-24
The 2010 Local High School Mock Trial Competition will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16 through Thursday, Feb. 18 and Monday, Feb. 22 through Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the Shelby County Courthouse. The MBA Young Lawyers Division is seeking attorneys and judges to volunteer as judges from 5:30 pm to no later than 8 pm each evening. Judges Also Needed for Moot Court Board Mock Trial Competition
The Moot Court Board of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is hosting its annual Mock Trial Competition and needs volunteers to serve as judges on the following dates:  Sat., Feb. 13 at 10 a.m.; Mon., Feb. 15, Tues., Feb. 16, and Wed., Feb. 17 at 8 p.m.; Fri., Feb. 19 at 5 p.m.; and Mon. Volunteer for New Legal Clinic for Homeless
Homeless Experience Legal Help (HELP) is a new volunteer legal clinic being started in Memphis.  HELP clinics, which are already operating in 15 other cities, provide legal advice and assistance to the homeless.  Along with Memphis Area Legal Services and the Community Legal Center, Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz is launching HELP in Memphis with a volunteer recruiting luncheon on Feb. 23 at noon in Baker Donelson's office, 165 Madison, #2000.  All interested members of the bar are invited to atend.  To learn more about HELP clinics, visit www.homelesslegalprotection.com.

Attorney Cary C. Woods has been appointed Divorce Referee of the 30th Judicial District by Shelby County Mayor Joe Ford.  He was officially sworn in at noon today.  Also, effective March 1, Division 9 of Circuit Court will set its own uncontested divorces.  You can either email carlyse.nevels@shelbycountytn.gov or drop by Division 9 (Room 236) to place an uncontested divorce on the calendar.  

Our Condolences 
Attorney Melvin Fleischer died Thurs., Jan. 21 after a long illness.  He was a member of the American Bar, Tennessee Bar, and Memphis Bar Associations for over 40 years.  He was a member of Temple Israel, served as president of B'Nai B'Rith Men, was a Mason, a Shriner, and a member of the Scottish Rite.  He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Charlee B. Fleischer, and his sons, Max of Nashville, and Donald and wife Jeanette of Memphis.  Memorials may be made to the charity of the donor's choice.

Attorney Kate Collins died on Tues., Feb. 2.  She was a graduate of the Loyola University of Chicago School of Law and had practiced law in Illinois, Ohio and Tennessee.  She is survived by her husband of 29 years, Brian Collins, and two sons, Steve and Jeff. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

MBA Communications Director Dottie McCallen and her husband, David, welcomed their second child, David James "Mac" McCallen, on Fri., Jan. 22.  He weighed in at 6 lb., 5 oz. and was  20" long. He is being looked after by big sister, Elizabeth, age 2 1/2.

The MBA Wellness/Professional Development Committee, co-chaired by Amy Amundsen and Elizabeth Collins, will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 24 at the Grove Grill, 4550 Poplar Ave. (in Laurelwood Shopping Center). Interested in Becoming a Law Professor?
The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is convening a half-day program, entitled “So You Want to Be a Law Professor,” on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in its new downtown facility. The workshop will offer insights from current and former law school faculty and administrators on such topics as:
• Resume lines that make a candidate more attractive to a hiring institution;
• Details of the faculty hiring process from both the applicant’s and the institution’s perspective;
• The teaching, scholarship and service responsibilities of a law professor.

Labor and Employment Law Symposium, February 19th at New Law School
On February 19, 2010, the University of Memphis Law Review with support from Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz, the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Memphis Bar Association, and the Memphis Mid-South Chapter of the Federal Bar Association will host its annual spring symposium at the new, downtown location of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. The symposium is entitled “Labor and Employment Law Today: Evolution or Revolution?” The labor and employment law symposium will be the first CLE-accredited event to be held at the new law school.
    The program will feature over thirty nationally prominent speakers who will discuss emerging legal and policy issues in labor and employment law and will cover a variety of labor and employment related issues including affirmative action, the Americans with Disabilities Act, retaliation, FLSA, and many others. Race Judicata 2010 -- April 10
The 5K Charity Run/Walk, sponsored by the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, will begin and end downtown at the park located at 51 N. Front St.  Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration: $15 by March 20; $20 after March 20; $25 on race day.  T-shirts will be guaranteed to all participants who register by March 20; and will be available on a first come, first served basis to those who register after March 20.  To register, go to www.racesonline.com. Race Judicata benefits Memphis Area Legal Services, which provides free legal services to the elderly and low-income families.

Memphis to Host Final Round of National Mock Trial Tournament, Judges Needed
Memphis has been selected to host the final round of the American Mock Trial Association’s 26th Annual National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament on April 16-18, 2010. Memphis will be only the 4th city to host the finals. This is a great opportunity to showcase both Memphis and Tennessee to 500 of the most talented students in the nation. The competition will be held at both the Shelby County Courthouse and the Criminal Justice Center. Several judges are needed for the competition. A judges’ informational session will be held one hour prior to each round.
