Judges Needed for High School Mock Trial Competition, Feb. 16-24
The 2010 Local High School Mock Trial Competition will be held Tuesday, Feb. 16 through Thursday, Feb. 18 and Monday, Feb. 22 through Wednesday, Feb. 24 at the Shelby County Courthouse. The MBA Young Lawyers Division is seeking attorneys and judges to volunteer as judges from 5:30 pm to no later than 8 pm each evening. Westlaw Training at Courthouse Law Library on Feb. 10th
The Shelby County Courthouse Law Library and Westlaw are offering training on how to access the wealth of information available through the Law Library's Westlaw plan. The training, along with lunch, will be offered on Wed., Feb. 10 at noon in the Homes Room of the Law Library. Volunteer for New Legal Clinic for Homeless
Homeless Experience Legal Help (HELP) is a new volunteer legal clinic being started in Memphis. HELP clinics, which are already operating in 15 other cities, provide legal advice and assistance to the homeless. Along with Memphis Area Legal Services and the Community Legal Center, Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz is launching HELP in Memphis with a volunteer recruiting luncheon on Feb. 23 at noon in Baker Donelson's office, 165 Madison, #2000. Memphis Moot Court Teams Advance
Two teams from the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law have advanced to the national finals of competitions sponsored by the National Black Law Students Association. The Frederick Douglass Moot Court Team, coached by Glankler Brown attorney Andre Mathis, won the Southern Region championship round. The Thurgood Marshall Mock Trial Team, coached by the university's associate counsel Melanie Murry, was the regional runner-up. Both teams will compete in the national championships in Boston in March.

Wellness/Professional Development Committee to Meet Feb. 24 at Grove Grill
The MBA Wellness/Professional Development Committee, co-chaired by Amy Amundsen and Elizabeth Collins, will meet at 5:30 p.m. on Wed., Feb. 24 at the Grove Grill, 4550 Poplar Ave. (in Laurelwood Shopping Center). Citizen Safety Coalition's Forum on Crime, Feb. 11th
In preparation for the State of Tennessee's 106th General Assembly, Operation: Safe Community will hold a Citizen's Safety Coalition Forum on Crime on Thursday, Feb. 11, 7:00-8:30 p.m., in the Jewish Community Center located at 6560 Poplar Ave. The forum will feature City Councilman (and attorney) Jim Strickland, state legislators, local mayors and leaders in law enforcement.

The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law is convening a half-day program, entitled “So You Want to Be a Law Professor,” on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010 at 1:00 p.m. in its new downtown facility. The workshop will offer insights from current and former law school faculty and administrators on such topics as:
• Resume lines that make a candidate more attractive to a hiring institution;
• Details of the faculty hiring process from both the applicant’s and the institution’s perspective;
• The teaching, scholarship and service responsibilities of a law professor.

Labor and Employment Law Symposium, February 19th at New Law School
On February 19, 2010, the University of Memphis Law Review with support from Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz, the Labor and Employment Law Section of the Memphis Bar Association, and the Memphis Mid-South Chapter of the Federal Bar Association will host its annual spring symposium at the new, downtown location of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. The symposium is entitled “Labor and Employment Law Today: Evolution or Revolution?” The labor and employment law symposium will be the first CLE-accredited event to be held at the new law school.
The program will feature over thirty nationally prominent speakers who will discuss emerging legal and policy issues in labor and employment law and will cover a variety of labor and employment related issues including affirmative action, the Americans with Disabilities Act, retaliation, FLSA, and many others. Memphis to Host Final Round of National Mock Trial Tournament, Judges Needed
Memphis has been selected to host the final round of the American Mock Trial Association’s 26th Annual National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament on April 16-18, 2010. Memphis will be only the 4th city to host the finals. This is a great opportunity to showcase both Memphis and Tennessee to 500 of the most talented students in the nation. The competition will be held at both the Shelby County Courthouse and the Criminal Justice Center. Several judges are needed for the competition.
