Health Care Notice Requirement is Approaching

The new Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act requires most employers to provide an Exchange Notice prior to October 1, 2013 that includes information regarding the Exchange (now called the Health Insurance Marketplace). The Department of Labor has provided two model notices. One notice applies to employers who offer a health plan to some or all employees and the other applies to employers who do not offer a health plan. New Dean to Speak at Memphis Bar Foundation Luncheon on Oct. 8

Peter Letsou, who became Dean of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law on June 1, is the featured speaker for the Memphis Bar Foundation’s luncheon on Tuesday, Oct. 8, 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Peabody Hotel. Dean Letsou will discuss his vision for the law school and how that will impact the Memphis legal community. In addition, new Fellows of the Foundation will be recognized, grants given to local non-profit agencies, and the Irvin Bogatin Awards presented to University of Memphis law students. Tickets are $50 per person; $500 for a table of 10.  CLE credit of .50 hours is pending. All proceeds will benefit the Memphis Bar Foundation’s grant-making program. Register Now for the YLD Golf Tournament

The Young Lawyers Division Golf Tournament is quickly approaching, register by September 27th to receive your t-shirt the day of the tournament. It will be held October 4th at Glen Eagle, the naval golf course just 20 minutes from downtown in Millington. Tee time is at 1:00 p.m. for this “shotgun start.” Proceeds from the Tournament will go to benefit the Downtown Porter Boys and Girls Club. Lawyer’s Lawyer and Myar Award Nomination Forms Now Available

Nominations are now being accepted for the MBA’s two highest honors – the Judge Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award and the Sam A. Myar, Jr. Memorial Award. Forms are due October 1, and both will be presented at the MBA’s Annual Meeting on Thurs., Dec. 5, 11:30 a.m. at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. 

The Judge Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award recognizes an attorney who has been practicing law for at least 15 years and who, during that time, has exemplified the aims and aspirations embodied in the Guidelines for Professional Courtesy and Conduct. The Sam A. Myar, Jr. Memorial Award is given to an attorney, 40 years of age or younger, who has rendered outstanding personal service to the legal profession and the community. Our Condolences

Evie Randolph Horton, age 82, died on Sept. 12 at Methodist Hospice House.  She was the widow of Memphis’ first black federal judge, the late U.S. District Judge Odell Horton. Mrs. Horton was a career Memphis educator and civic leader, well known for her cultural and social contributions. She is survived by her sons, attorney Odell Horton, Jr. and Christopher Horton, and two grandsons, Odell III and Matthew. Visitation will be held Thurs., Sept. 19 from 4-8 p.m. at Mt. Pisgah CME Church Park Ave.  Funeral services will be held on Friday at 11 a.m. at Greenwood CME Church Kimball Ave., with burial to follow at historic Elmwood Cemetery. R.S. Lewis & Sons Funeral Home is in charge (901.526.3264).

Introduction to Criminal Practice at 201 Poplar, Sept. 25

The Government Lawyers Section of the MBA will present "Introduction to Criminal Law Practice at 201 Poplar" on Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Martin, Tate, Morrow & Marston from 2:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Presenter Patrick Stegall will explain the procedures in the general sessions court, the criminal court downtown, aka "201," as well as the procedures in the suburban courts, including Bartlett, Collierville, and Germantown. This seminar will also help you answer those questions posed by family and friends who find themselves in criminal court, including how to keep a conviction off a person’s record, and the penalties someone can expect for a first offense. Mr. Stegall will also provide lessons learned from starting The Stegall Law Firm. In addition, Mr. Stegall can answer your questions about guns and gun laws. As part of his practice, Mr. Stegall drafts firearms trusts for individuals and families who wish to own federally regulated weapons such as sound suppressors and machine guns. He is licensed in Tennessee and Mississippi.

23rd Annual Red Mass to be held Sept. 27

The St. Thomas More Catholic Lawyers' Guild invites you to join them for their annual Red Mass on Friday, September 27 at noon at St. Peter Church (190 Adams Avenue.) The Liturgy will be celebrated by J. Terry Steib, S.D., DD., Bishop of Memphis in Tennessee, and Fr. Robert Marshall will serve as homilist. The Mass will be concelebrated by priests of the Diocese of Memphis. Father Robert Szczechura will serve as Master of Ceremonies. In connection with the Red Mass, each of the Catholic high schools in the Diocese of Memphis and Christian Brothers University have been invited to send students to attend the Red Mass as well as a special program before the Mass designed just for them. Students will hear presentations on financial literacy and the rule of law by the Honorable John T. Fowlkes, Jr. United States District Judge for the Western District of Tennessee.

The annual SBA Golf Tournament will be held this year on Sat. Sept. 28 at Tunica National Golf Course. Health Law Section to Host Speed Networking Event on Oct. 10

The Memphis Bar Association Health Law Section will hold its inaugural Speed Networking event on Thursday, October 10, 2013, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. in the 4th floor Reading Room at The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. This event will offer the opportunity for mentees - students, new attorneys and attorneys with less than five years of experience in the practice of health law - to meet and network with mentors - attorneys who have been practicing in the field for five or more years. Mentees will spend around five minutes talking to a mentor before moving on to the next mentor. Mentors may describe their current position, past positions and areas of expertise and discuss the future of health law. Mentees likely will have specific questions about hot areas in health law, job forecasts and other related topics of interest.
