Bench Bar Conference in Destin This Week

The 2013 Bench Bar & Boardroom Conference got underway yesterday at Tops'l Beach & Racquet Resort in Destin, Florida. Spread the Word! FREE Legal Clinic Saturday

The monthly FREE Legal Clinic will be held on Saturday, May 11th from 10 a.m. to noon at the Benjamin L. Hooks Library (main public library) at 3030 Poplar Avenue in the 3rd Floor Reading Room. This month’s clinic is sponsored by the attorneys and staff of Evans Petree and FedEx and is open to all members of the public in need of legal advice.
     Please help us spread the word to those in need in our community about this valuable resource. It is likely that the receptionist at your office takes at least one call per day from a person who would benefit from the clinic.     Initiated in October 2007, the Saturday Legal Clinic is sponsored by the Memphis Bar Association and Memphis Area Legal Services and is a project of the Access to Justice Committee, a collaborative effort of local bar associations and non-profit organizations to provide legal services to those in need. The clinics are held the second Saturday of each month from 10 am to 12 pm at the main library (3030 Poplar Avenue). Volunteer attorneys provide free legal assistance to those in need on a first come, first served basis. For more information about the clinic or to volunteer, click here.

New Electronic Filing Requirements for Professional Privilege Tax

All professional privilege tax returns filed on or after January 1, 2013, must be filed electronically. Professional privilege tax returns can be filed electronically either by individuals, or by companies who file and pay for multiple individuals. The department will not be mailing taxpayers a Professional Privilege Tax Return for the $400 tax due June 1, 2013. For a step-by-step guide to electronically file an individual professional privilege tax return, please visit https://apps.tn.gov/privtx/. April Veterans’ Clinic A Great Success

The MBA Veterans’ Committee, in conjunction with Memphis Area Legal Services, held its second monthly Veterans’ Legal Clinic on Tuesday, April 23rd at the VA Medical Center on Union Avenue. Dozens of veterans obtained legal assistance in the areas of child support/visitation, driver’s license suspensions, landlord/tenant, employment, and debtor/creditor issues, among other areas. The roughly 20 volunteer attorneys and paralegals who helped provided a great service to our community and to the veterans. Many of the volunteers were also able to take advantage of the free 1-hour CLE/training that proceeded the Veterans’ Clinic.
    Thanks to the MBA Leadership Forum small group of Anne Davis, Gabrielle Lewis, Maya Siggers, Tony Silva, and Jake Dickerson for coordinating the April Veterans’ Clinic. Nunc Pro Dunk Edges Out FedEx to Win the 2013 MBA YLD Basketball Championship



Nunc Pro Dunk (Wyatt, Tarrant & Combs) outlasted Fedex on Monday night, May 6th to win a hard fought game and take home the 2013 MBA YLD Basketball Championship. The players on Nunc Pro Dunk were Sumpter McGowin, Lee Harkavy, Ed Autrey, Jordan Reifler, JB Reafsnyder, Corey Strong, Trent Williams, Robert Ashby, and Bryson McCabe. Congrats to the Champs!
     Thanks to everyone who played this season. With the inclusion of local law students on the rosters this year, the league saw an increase of two teams, bringing the league to 9 total teams. Players this year have commented that the league enjoyed more parity in the competition and better games thanks to a successful draft. Thanks to Nic Vescovo for serving as league commissioner this year. And thanks to Tim Johnson, who oversaw the league for numerous years until handing off the reins to Nic during the off season.

U of M Law to Welcome Robert F. Kennedy Jr. as Graduation Speaker

Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. will serve as the official speaker for the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law Class of 2013 Graduation. He will address the graduating class on Sunday, May 12, 2013 at 3:00 p.m. at the Cannon Center in downtown Memphis during the ceremony, sponsored by Duncan-Williams. 
     Mr. Kennedy is an environmental business leader, lawyer and advocate. He is a professor of environmental law at Pace University School of Law and serves as co-director of the school's Environmental Litigation Clinic. He also serves as senior attorney for the Natural Resources Defense Council, chief prosecuting attorney for the Hudson Riverkeeper, president-at-large of the Waterkeeper Alliance, is a partner on the CleanTech investment team of Silicon Valley’s VantagePoint Capital Ventures, is the environmental advisor to Napo Pharmaceuticals, and serves on the board of directors for Westinghouse Solar.

Workshop on Combatting Human Trafficking, May 23

On Thursday, May 23rd, a workshop entitled “Human Trafficking and Modern-Day Slavery in the Mid-South: Practical Tools for an Effective Response,” will be held from 9 am to 4 pm in the McCallum Ballroom at Rhodes College (2000 N. Parkway). This comprehensive training is designed for people who are service providers, medical professionals, religious leaders, translators, law enforcement, immigrant advocates, Department of Labor employees or a person concerned with the growing problem of human trafficking, slavery and exploitation. This training will equip you to become a community partner in assisting victims and addressing these terrible crimes. $15 includes all materials and lunch. Seating is limited to 100 attendees. St. Jude Presents John Rich & Friends, June 4

AWA Golf Tournament, June 7

The Association of Women Attorneys will host its second annual golf tournament benefiting the AWA Scholarship Fund on Friday, June 7th with a shotgun start at 1 pm at Mirimichi Championship Course in Millington, TN. All are welcome to come play for great prizes in this 4 person scramble. Registration is $150 per player, which includes scramble entry, prizes and lunch. For non-golfers, environmental tours are available during the event that will provide a unique experience to learn about the only golf course in the world recognized with both Audubon International Classic Sanctuary and Golf Environmental Organization certifications.
