Title Sponsors Add Value to the MBA

A Message from MBA Executive Director Anne Fritz

For the past several years, the Memphis Bar Association has strengthened its financial condition due to sponsorships received from our Title Sponsors. The Title Sponsors provide Membership Benefits that are visible in several ways:

  1. Monetary contributions from our Title Sponsors enables the Memphis Bar Association to reduce the cost of special events;
  2. Provide a source for a superior level of service; and
  3. Provide a source for vetted products with unique benefits and discounts.

     To provide the maximum benefit to our Title Sponsors, it is important that MBA members give them the opportunity to provide quotes regarding what services they can offer. In particular, Insurance Planning and Service Company, LLC. (IPSCO) provides innovative insurance products tailored for lawyers, dentists, physicians and accountants. IPSCO has a 60 year track record and has been a friend and Title Sponsor Partner of the Memphis Bar Association since 2006. The MBA uses IPSCO for its insurance needs, and they have consistently provided superior service in addition to saving us money!
      As we strengthen our partners, we will strengthen our association. I encourage you to find one line of insurance, i.e., auto, home owners, medical insurance, disability, life insurance, workers’ compensation, professional liability, business office package, EPLI or cyber liability and ask IPSCO to give you a quote. continued here

Memphis Law Hosts Workshop on Private International Law, January 13-14

On January 13-14, 2013, the University of Memphis School of Law, in conjunction with the Russian Cultural Center of Memphis, will convene a roundtable titled “Workshop on Private International Law in Context: Prospects and Challenges for Russian-American Bilateral Trade and Cultural Exchange Following Russia’s Accession to the WTO.” The workshop is meant to bring together academics, policymakers and business leaders from both Russia and the U.S. Workshop discussions will focus on three closely interrelated themes. First, participants will discuss the implications of Russia’s accession to the WTO and recent legal developments in American-Russian bilateral relations, including the repeal of the 1974 Jackson-Vanik amendment and the recent passage of the U.S. Magnitsky Act. Second, the goal of the workshop is to provide an opportunity for bilateral exchange between Russian and mid-South leaders in commercial, cultural and educational sectors. Third, the workshop hopes to foster student and American practitioner interest in educational and business opportunities in Russia, with a view towards establishing bilateral institutional linkages.
     On January 13, 2013, workshop participants will take part in cultural events at the Russian Cultural Center (Memphis), located at 509 S. Main Street, Memphis, TN 38103. The workshop will continue on January 14, 2013 at the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law. A draft schedule is available here. Space is limited. U of M Law Review's Annual Symposium, March 22

The University of Memphis Law Review’s annual Symposium will be held on March 22, 2013. The full-day event will take a close look at key areas of human trafficking in the court system on both a national and statewide level. Human trafficking is often viewed as a distant, international issue. However, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other forms of human trafficking occur every day right outside our backdoor. Tennessee recently passed some of the strongest anti-trafficking laws in the country, and the passage of this legislation guarantees that the issue will arise with increasing frequency in our state courts. For more information, contact Memphis Law Review Symposium Editor Jessica Bradley at

National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament in Memphis, March 22-24

The Opening Round of the American Mock Trial Association’s 29th National Intercollegiate Tournament will again be held in Memphis at the Shelby County Courthouse, Friday, March 22, Saturday, March 23, and Sunday March 24,2013. The Rhodes College Mock Trial Team invites you to participate in this national tournament by serving as a judge for one or more of the four rounds of competition. Volunteering at the trial has been approved for up to 9 hours of CLE credit in Tennessee and will likely be approved in Arkansas and Mississippi for up to 14 hours. To volunteer or for more information, contact Barbara Pohlmann, 901-624-0309 or, or Marcus Pohlmann, 901-843-3843 or

Trial Academy Rescheduled for March 2013

The MBA Trial Academy, sponsored by the MBA Litigation Section, will be held March 13-15, 2013, at the Shelby County Courthouse. The Academy is a “learn by doing” seminar designed to hone the trial skills of young attorneys. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance, for which they will have to prepare, just as for an actual trial. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
     The registration fee is $750, a bargain when compared to similar programs. For more information or to sign up to receive further details closer to time, contact Lesia Beach at
