TBA & U of M Law School to Host "Balancing Civility & Free Expression" Event

The Tennessee Bar Association and the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will hold a public forum on the issue of free speech and civility in the public square on Sept. 18 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the law school's Wade Auditorium. The event, the first in a series of three forums across the state designed to encourage a public conversation about the tensions between civility and free speech, will focus on how these issues play out in public policy debates -- especially those with cross-cultural implications. The program will use the current school consolidation effort in Memphis as a case study of how to bring civility into a divisive debate. To learn more about the program, click here.

Sixth Annual Speaker Development Workshop

The Tennessee Commission on Continuing Legal Education & Specialization will host its Sixth Annual Speaker Development Workshop September 20-22 at Montgomery Bell State Park with presenter Kathy Story of Story Consulting. It will start on Thursday at 4:00 pm and go to 6:30, then Friday from 8:30 to 4:30 and Saturday 8:30 to 12:30.
This workshop is for Tennessee attorneys who have spoken at CLE programs in the past, enjoy it and do a good job of it but want to do better. The workshop will make the participants better CLE speakers, but it goes beyond this. Participants will gain insight into their personal learning style, how other styles differ, and what this means not only for teaching, but also for working with and leading others. Yes, they will become better speakers, but also better lawyers and leaders!
This workshop is absolutely free. The CLE Commission will pay for the lodging and meals. It is their investment in both the participants and the quality of CLE programming in Tennessee. But, enrollment is limited! The class will be filled in the order responses are received.
For additional information and to sign up, contact the Tennessee Commission on CLE and Specialization at (615) 741-3096.

Better Business Bureau Legal Program Series, September 11

For the past couple of years, the MBA Labor & Employment Law Section has provided speakers for a series of legal education programs at the Better Business Bureau. While the programs are meant for business owners and managers, they would be useful for lawyers who specialize in areas other than labor and employment law or for beginning lawyers. The programs are held on the 2nd Tuesday of the month from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the BBB’s offices located at 3693 Tyndale Drive (just east of Winchester & Forest Hill Irene junction). The cost is $10 for BBB or MBA members, $15 for non-members, and includes lunch. No CLE credit is offered for these programs. To make a reservation, contact Cheryl Stewart at the BBB, 757.8603; Upcoming topics and speakers are:
Sept. 11 – Hiring Contractors Without Breaking the Law and Other Common Wage Payment Questions – Joyce Margulies, Margulies Employment Law Consulting
Oct. 30 – Surviving the Legal Minefield of Managing Employee Absenteeism – Tim Bland, Ford & Harrison

Play Golf with Your Colleagues, September 28th

On September 28, 2012, the MBA Young Lawyers Division will host its annual Golf Tournament at Glen Eagle Golf Course located in Millington, Tennessee. Tee time is at 1:00 p.m. for this “shotgun start” and all members of the Memphis legal community are invited to take part. Managed by the Navy Golf Program, Glen Eagle Golf Course features rolling hills, magnificent fairways, and well-maintained greens. The course provides an exciting play for golfers of any skill level. At only 20 minutes from downtown Memphis and a registration fee of $65 per person, the Golf Tournament is both conveniently located and affordable. Plus, proceeds from the Tournament will go to benefit the Downtown Porter Boys and Girls Club. Prizes will also be awarded to our top finishers, as well as for the longest drive and closet to the pin, just to name a few. So, whether you are a scratch golfer or consider making contact with the ball off the tee a personal triumph, this is the tournament for you, as good times will be had by all. We'd like to thank the title sponsors of this year's tournament—Alpha Reporting Corp., BankTennessee, IPSCO - Insurance Service & Planning Co., and The Marston Group. To register online now, click here.

Learn by Doing at the Trial Academy, October 19-21

The MBA’s Litigation Section is sponsoring The Trial Academy from Oct. 19-21 (during Judicial Conference) at the Shelby County Courthouse. The Academy is a “learn by doing” seminar designed to hone the trial skills of young attorneys. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance, for which they will have to prepare, just as for an actual trial. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
The registration fee is $750, a bargain when compared to similar programs. More information, including a schedule, will be available in the next month. Check for the latest information and mark your calendar now to attend!

Strut! Memphis, October 25

Mark your calendar for STRUT! Memphis on Thursday, October 25, 2012, at Mercedes-Benz of Memphis to benefit The Community Legal Center (CLC). At last year’s event, the inaugural year of STRUT! Memphis, 300 business and community leaders hobnobbed while enjoying the latest in celebrity style and fashion. Some even snagged a really great purchase at auction—like a trip to New York for fashion week. Celebrity bartenders, such as Mayor A.C. Wharton, Jr., District Attorney General Amy Weirich, Fox 13’s Mearl Purvis and Wrestling Great Jerry “The King” Lawler, topped off the festivities, pouring drinks and rubbing elbows.
Tickets are available and can be purchased through any CLC board member. Tickets are $50, but if purchased in advance, the board is offering a $10 per ticket discount so you may obtain tickets until the day of the event for $40. Tickets may also be purchased on the CLC website,, through Pay Pal or credit card; or at Booksellers in Laurelwood or the CLC main office at 910 Vance Ave. in the MIFA building.
Changing lives and strengthening the community is a good look for you and your organization! Be a STRUT! Memphis sponsor. Call the CLC at 543-3395 for more information.

U of M Law Review's Annual Symposium, March 22

The University of Memphis Law Review’s annual Symposium will be held on March 22, 2013. The full-day event will take a close look at key areas of human trafficking in the court system on both a national and statewide level. Human trafficking is often viewed as a distant, international issue. However, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other forms of human trafficking occur every day right outside our backdoor. Tennessee recently passed some of the strongest anti-trafficking laws in the country, and the passage of this legislation guarantees that the issue will arise with increasing frequency in our state courts. For more information, contact Memphis Law Review Symposium Editor Jessica Bradley at
