"Law Rules" Volunteer Reception with Justice Holder

On Monday, August 13th at 4 pm, members of the Memphis legal community are invited to attend a reception to hear about the progress we've made through the "Law Rules" program. Initiated in January 2012, the goal of the program is to educate the public about the importance of a fair and impartial justice system and the rule of law through visits to schools, businesses, civic groups, and professional organizations in Memphis and Shelby County. We set out to visit 200 groups and we're about one-fourth of the way there. At this reception, you will hear from Tennessee Supreme Court Justice Janice M. Holder. Wine and light hors d’oeuvres will be served. All current volunteers and anyone interested in getting involved are invited to attend. Please RSVP to ckgean@memphisbar.org.

Leadership Forum Applications Due July 31

Applications are now available for the MBA’s award-winning Leadership Forum at www.memphisbar.org/leadershipforum or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3573; afritz@memphisbar.org). The deadline to apply is July 31.
The Leadership Forum’s mission is to develop the leadership skills of young attorneys (between the 3rd and 8th year of practice); empower young attorneys to use their skills to make greater contributions to the Memphis community and the legal profession; model and practice the highest standards of the legal profession; and build relationships among attorneys of diverse backgrounds. The Forum accomplishes this mission through a full-day retreat on September 14, where leadership concepts are introduced, followed by monthly meetings on topics such as the attorney’s role in the greater community, work/life balance, conflict resolution, and communication skills. The monthly sessions are held at various locations around the city, to acquaint participants with the services and programs offered by community organizations. In addition, the participants are assigned to small groups to develop and implement a community service project.
Tuition is $575. A limited number of scholarships are available. Now in its 8th year, the Leadership Forum has helped hone the leadership skills of over 150 attorneys. The forum received an E. Smythe Gambrell Award from the ABA in 2006; the award recognizes outstanding achievement in the design and implementation of a model professionalism program. To learn more, click here.

Memphis Bar Foundation Grant Applications Due August 10

Apply for MBA Rep to ABA House of Delegates by August 15

Al Harvey, the current MBA delegate to the ABA House of Delegates, will reach his “term limit” following the conclusion of the 2012 ABA Annual Meeting in August. The MBA is currently seeking members who are interested in serving as MBA Delegate. The delegate serves a 2-year term and can be re-appointed for two consecutive terms, for a total of 6 years. Due to budget constraints, the MBA is unable to offer financial assistance in underwriting the delegate’s attendance at the ABA mid-year and annual meetings.

If you are interested in being considered by the MBA Board for this position, please send a statement of interest, along with your resume or curriculum vitae, to Executive Director Anne Fritz at 80 Monroe Ave., Suite 220, Memphis, TN 38103 or afritz@memphisbar.org by Aug. 15, 2012. Learn by Doing at the Trial Academy, October 19-21

The MBA’s Litigation Section is sponsoring The Trial Academy from Oct. 19-21 (during Judicial Conference) at the Shelby County Courthouse. The Academy is a “learn by doing” seminar designed to hone the trial skills of young attorneys. Participants will receive a civil trial problem in advance, for which they will have to prepare, just as for an actual trial. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
The registration fee is $750, a bargain when compared to similar programs. More information, including a schedule, will be available in the next month. Check www.memphisbar.org for the latest information and mark your calendar now to attend!

U of M Law Review's Annual Symposium, March 22

The University of Memphis Law Review’s annual Symposium will be held on March 22, 2013. The full-day event will take a close look at key areas of human trafficking in the court system on both a national and statewide level. Human trafficking is often viewed as a distant, international issue. However, sex trafficking, labor trafficking, and other forms of human trafficking occur every day right outside our backdoor. Tennessee recently passed some of the strongest anti-trafficking laws in the country, and the passage of this legislation guarantees that the issue will arise with increasing frequency in our state courts. For more information, contact Memphis Law Review Symposium Editor Jessica Bradley at jbrdley1@memphis.edu.
