Tennessee Attorneys Reporting More Pro Bono Hours

Recently, the Board of Professional Responsibility reported that more than 46 percent of Tennessee attorneys are reporting some pro bono work. This is the highest percentage of pro bono reporting since voluntary pro bono reporting began in 2009 and more than twice the percentage from the first year. This is up six percent from last year and does not include some attorneys that have yet to renew their licenses and report hours.
“It is great to see more attorneys taking time to volunteer and to make sure Tennesseans continue to have access to justice,” said Justice Janice M. Holder. “We applaud these attorneys and the various legal services agencies, bar associations and others for their efforts. I encourage all attorneys to consider pro bono work because it’s a truly rewarding experience.”
Each year, when attorneys renew their law license, the renewal form includes a section where attorneys are asked to voluntarily report the pro bono work they did in the previous calendar year. So far, approximately 3,860 lawyers with Tennessee law licenses residing in Tennessee reported 329,285 hours of pro bono work.

Apply Now for 2012-2013 Leadership Forum

Applications are now available for the MBA’s award-winning Leadership Forum at www.memphisbar.org/leadershipforum or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3573; afritz@memphisbar.org). The deadline to apply is July 31.
The Leadership Forum’s mission is to develop the leadership skills of young attorneys (between the 3rd and 8th year of practice); empower young attorneys to use their skills to make greater contributions to the Memphis community and the legal profession; model and practice the highest standards of the legal profession; and build relationships among attorneys of diverse backgrounds. The Forum accomplishes this mission through a full-day retreat on September 14, where leadership concepts are introduced, followed by monthly meetings on topics such as the attorney’s role in the greater community, work/life balance, conflict resolution, and communication skills. The monthly sessions are held at various locations around the city, to acquaint participants with the services and programs offered by community organizations. In addition, the participants are assigned to small groups to develop and implement a community service project.
Tuition is $575. A limited number of scholarships are available. Now in its 8th year, the Leadership Forum has helped hone the leadership skills of over 150 attorneys. The forum received an E. Smythe Gambrell Award from the ABA in 2006; the award recognizes outstanding achievement in the design and implementation of a model professionalism program. To learn more, click here.

The MBA’s Litigation Section is sponsoring The Trial Academy from Oct. 19-21 (during Judicial Conference) at the Shelby County Courthouse. At the Academy, the participants will conduct trial exercises while being videotaped and will receive a constructive critique of their performance from some of the finest trial lawyers in Memphis and the surrounding area. This is an invaluable and cost effective way to get courtroom training when the opportunities for trial experience are dwindling.
The registration fee is $750, a bargain when compared to similar programs. More information, including a schedule, will be available in the next month. Check www.memphisbar.org for the latest information and mark your calendar now to attend!
