Alert Regarding Internet Scheme Targeting Lawyers

The Mississippit Secretary of State’s Office circulated an alert earlier this week regarding an internet scheme with international ties that bilked a Mississippi attorney out of hundreds of thousands of dollars. The Mississippi attorney received an email from someone purporting to be Robert Larsen of Larsen Fabrics located in the United Kingdom. “Mr. Larsen” claimed a Mississippi company owed money on a contract and was willing to settle. “Mr. Larsen” employed the Mississippi attorney to collect the debt. The attorney was then informed the Mississippi company was prepared to settle. A fraudulent settlement check was sent to the attorney, allegedly from the Mississippi company. The attorney deposited the check and wired funds to a Japanese account before the fraud was discovered. The Mississippi company had no knowledge of the scheme until contacted by investigators.
Business identify theft is a growing problem in the United States. The Mississippi Secretary of State’s Office encourages all businesses to regularly review its business filings on our website at to ensure no pertinent business information has been changed without authorization. Report any suspicious activity in a business filing to the Business Services Division of the Secretary of State’s Office at 601-359-1633.

"For the Love of Pam" Breakfast, February 14

On Tuesday, February 14, Baker Donelson will be hosting "For the Love of Pam," a Valentine's Day breakfast benefiting the Pam Cobb Paralegal Scholarship Fund. Pam was a paralegal at Baker Donelson from 2004 until 2010, when she passed away after bravely battling colon cancer for several years. Pam was a leader, a pioneer and a champion of the paralegal profession who tirelessly lobbied for certification and recognition of paralegals in a positive light. She taught paralegal studies classes at Southwest Tennessee Community College and was a member of the Greater Memphis Paralegal Alliance (GMPA), where she served as chair of every committee and in every office, including two terms as President.
In recognition of that reputation and Pam's dedication to clients, co-workers and the legal profession, in 2010 Southwest Tennessee Community College and the GMPA established the Pam Cobb Paralegal Scholarship Fund for students who need a hand up to study, to grow and to contribute to the legal profession that Pam loved and championed.
Baker Donelson hopes to make "For the Love of Pam" an annual event that shows our continued support for this worthy cause and our love and respect for Pam. To do so, we need to make this inaugural event a success. Please spread the word to your clients, colleagues and friends and invite them to join us for a wonderful breakfast benefiting a great cause. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased through Charlotte Gean at the MBA office, or 901.527.3574.  Checks should be made payable to "Southwest Tennessee Community College Foundation" with the memo "Pam Cobb Scholarship Fund." Anyone who can't attend the breakfast can still show their support through donations to the scholarship fund.
