2012 Summer Law Intern Program Applications Now Available
Applications for the 2012 Summer Law Intern Program, which introduces minority high school students to the “real world” practice of law, are now available. The program is open to students who will be entering their junior or senior year of high school in August 2012 and who are residents of Shelby County. In addition to the application, students must write an essay on why they want to participate in the program, get a letter of reference from an adult, and be interviewed by a panel of attorneys. If accepted, the student will work at least 60 hours from June 4-29 and attend group activities on Friday afternoon. If the student successfully completes the internship, he/she will receive a $500 stipend.
Click here to download an application or contact Mary Lynes (271.0660; firstname.lastname@example.org). If you know a minority high school student with an interest in the law, please encourage them to apply. If you are interested in sponsoring an intern, either by having them work in your office or by paying the stipend so they can work at a government or non-profit agency, please contact Anne Fritz (527.3575; email@example.com).
Women Lawyers’ Retreat on Feb. 6
The MBA is sponsoring “Reflection, Resilience, Renewal: A Retreat for Women Lawyers” on Monday, Feb. 6 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at St. Columba Retreat Center in Bartlett. The retreat will combine hands-on experiential learning with cutting edge research to provide a time for women lawyers to step back and reflect upon their lives, explore the key components of resilience and change, and recommit to their own personal and professional growth and development. The retreat is led by facilitator Kathy Story who has developed and presented these workshops nationally to hundreds of attorneys and judges.
The retreat is approved for 6.5 hours of dual CLE credit and the registration fee is $250. A limited number of half-price scholarships for young women attorneys are available. For more information about the retreat, click here.
Speaker Training for "Law Rules" January 30th
The MBA, led by 2012 President Gary Smith, Secretary Tommy Parker and member Porter Feild, is developing a community outreach program entitle "Law Rules: The Importance of the American Legal System." The goal of the program is to put members of the MBA before hundreds of classrooms, civic and church groups, and business/professional organizations to educate the general public on the importance of a fair and impartial justice system and the rule of law. Currently, the MBA is looking for volunteers to lead the discussions as well as venues and groups for "Law Rules" speakers to address. Help us reach our goal of 200 visits! If you would like to volunteer or would like to schedule a speaker for your group or organization, please contact Anne Fritz at firstname.lastname@example.org or 901.527.3573. A training session for volunteer speakers will be held on Monday, January 30, 2012, at 4:00 p.m. at the MBA office, 80 Monroe Avenue, Suite 220. For more information, click here.
Volunteer to Assist Law Students
In a joint effort with the University of Memphis School of Law, the MBA is compiling two lists of local attorneys willing to assist law students. The first list will include attorneys who are able to spend 15 minutes or so of their time with a law student answering career related questions. The other list will include attorneys who are willing to allow a student to shadow them on legal matters such as motions, depositions, and the like after the student has signed a confidentiality agreement. If you are willing to assist in either manner, please contact Mary Lynes at email@example.com or 901.527.3573.
