The MBA, led by 2012 President Gary Smith, Secretary Tommy Parker and member Porter Feild, is developing a community outreach program entitle "Law Rules: The Importance of the American Legal System." The goal of the program is to put members of the MBA before hundreds of classrooms, civic and church groups, and business/professional organizations to educate the general public on the importance of our justice system and what it means in our daily lives and work. Currently, the MBA is looking for volunteers to lead the discussions as well as venues and groups for "Law Rules" speakers to address. Help us reach our goal of 200 visits! Seminar Featuring Israeli IP Attorney, Jan. 9
“Israeli Entrepreneurship and Technological Innovation: Perspectives from an Israeli IP Attorney” will be held Monday, January 9, 2012, from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm at Baker Donelson Bearman Caldwell & Berkowitz (165 Madison Ave). Respond to General Sessions Criminal Court Judicial Commissioners Survey by January 13
The General Sessions Criminal Court Judges Office is committed to improving and evaluating the program of Judicial Commissioners in accordance to Tenn. Code Ann. § 40-1-111. MBA members who often work directly with General Sessions Criminal Court are asked to complete this survey. The goal of the survey is to give the General Sessions Criminal Court Judges an opportunity to assess the performance and the effectiveness of the system of Judicial Commissioners. High School Mock Trial Tournament, February 7-16
MBA Young Lawyers Division Needs Volunteer Judges
The MBA Young Lawyers Division is busy preparing for the 2012 Memphis and Shelby County High School Mock Trial Competition, which will be held February 7-9, 13, and 15-16 at the Shelby County Courthouse at 140 Adams Avenue in downtown Memphis. Law Symposium Will Discuss Death Penalty Issues, Including the "West Memphis Three" Case
“Cultural competence,” a new concept in the legal defense of persons accused of a crime for which the death penalty is allowed, will be the focus of a March 2012 symposium sponsored by the Law Review of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. The Hon. Dan Stidham, an Arkansas judge who was a lawyer on the original defense team for accused murderers the “West Memphis Three,” has agreed to write an article for the symposium, and event organizers are seeking other articles for the review. Authors of articles selected for inclusion in the law review will be invited to speak at the symposium, which will be held March 30, 2012.
Judges Needed for Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament, March 23-25
Memphis is again one of eight sites selected to host post-regional opening rounds of the American Mock Trial Association’s 28th Annual National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament. This is a great opportunity to showcase both Memphis and Tennessee to more than 200 of the most talented students in the nation. The competition will be held Friday, March 23; Saturday, March 24; and Sunday March 25. The Rhodes College Mock Trial Team invites you to participate in this national tournament by serving as a judge for one or more of the four rounds of competition. Thanks to the generous efforts of Judges James Russell, the tournament will be held in the Shelby County Courthouse and at 201 Poplar.
