The results of the MBA election will be announced at the MBA Annual Meeting luncheon on Thursday, Dec. 1 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Hilton (I-240 and Poplar Interchange). Myar, Jr. Memorial Award will be presented to Lucie Brackin, and the Judge Jerome Turner Lawyer’s Lawyer Award will be presented to Elizabeth Collins.  Additionally, Gary Smith will assume his position as MBA President. Services Today for John Evans McKee, Jr.

Attorney John Evans McKee, Jr. died November 21, 2011, at the age of 88. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m., today, Wednesday, November 23, 2011, at Second Presbyterian Church Chapel. The family will visit with friends following the service until 12:30 pm with the interment to follow at 1 pm at Memorial Park Cemetery.
     McKee was born June 29, 1923, in Chattanooga to Mr. & Mrs. John E. McKee. Following high school, McKee joined the U.S. Air Force and flew several missions during World War II. During his combat tour, he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross, Air Medal, Five Oak Leaf Clusters and Eight Battle Stars. He was also in the Tennessee Air National Guard. Mr. McKee attended Southwestern University where he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. In 1949, he graduated from Vanderbilt Law School where he was a member of the Phi Alpha Delta Law Fraternity. He practiced law in Memphis for almost 60 years. His first association was with the law firm of Nelson, Norvell and Floyd. He retired from Lewis, McKee and Hall.  
     Mr. McKee was preceded in death by his daughter, Kay McKee Spear. He is survived by his devoted wife of 64 years, Martha Ann Osterloh McKee; son, John Evans McKee III (Billie); 3 grandchildren, Stacie Northcutt Denton (Bill Joe), Taylor McKee Waring (Jeff), and Evans Brooke McKee. The family requests that memorial donations be made to Second Presbyterian Church or the charity of your choice .

ADR Annual CLE Seminar, December 7

The MBA ADR Section will host its Annual CLE Seminar  on Wednesday, December 7, 2011 from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the University of Memphis Fogelman Executive Center (330 Deloach). Nationally known mediator, Larry Bridgesmith will be the featured presenter. He is Founding Executive Director, Senior Fellow and Associate Professor at the Institute for Conflict Management - Lipscomb University. The seminar will provide “advanced” training for mediators and “tools” that a mediator can use to intervene at some of the most difficult times during a mediation. In addition, in the morning and afternoon, Mr. Bridgesmith will present ethical vignettes and at the end of the morning and afternoon sessions, a panel of mediators will discuss the ethical issues raised during the vignettes. Registration and Continental Breakfast begins at 8:00 a.m. Lunch will be provided. Federalist Society Debate, December 9

The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will present "A Debate Over The Federal Model Judicial Selection Proposal for Tennessee-SJR 475" with State Senator Brian Kelsey (R. Germantown) and Danny Van Horn, President of the Tennessee Bar Association. U.S. Magistrate Judge Charmiane G. Claxton will serve as moderator. The event will be held on Friday, December 9th from 11:30 am to 1:00 pm at The Madison Hotel in downtown Memphis. Cost is $25.00 for Federalist Society Members and $30.00 for Non-Members. The MBA Young Lawyers Division will present "Legal Ethics in the Movies" with speaker Mike McLaren of Black McLaren Jones Ryland & Griffee, PC, on Wednesday, December 28th from 3-5 pm in the auditorium at Memphis Bioworks Foundation, 20 Dudley Street in the medical district. This will be a discussion of current and local ethical issues using clips from popular movies. Law Symposium Will Discuss Death Penalty Issues, Including the "West Memphis Three" Case

“Cultural competence,” a new concept in the legal defense of persons accused of a crime for which the death penalty is allowed, will be the focus of a March 2012 symposium sponsored by the Law Review of the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law at the University of Memphis. The Hon. Dan Stidham, an Arkansas judge who was a lawyer on the original defense team for accused murderers the “West Memphis Three,” has agreed to write an article for the symposium, and event organizers are seeking other articles for the review. Authors of articles selected for inclusion in the law review will be invited to speak at the symposium, which will be held March 30, 2012.
