On August 18, 2011, the MBA Young Lawyers Division is partnering with the Student Bar Association at the University of Memphis law school for the Redbirds v. Las Vegas 51s game at Autozone Park. The event will take place as part of the law school’s orientation for new students. BankTennessee and Alpha Reporting Corporation have generously offered to sponsor the event on behalf of the YLD. The festivities will begin at 6:05 p.m. with the game at 7:05 p.m. Tickets are free to MBA members and their guests, with a suggested donation of $5 per ticket, proceeds going to MALS. Memphis Bar Foundation Grant Applications Now Available
Applications for grants from the Memphis Bar Foundation are now available at www.memphisbar.org or by contacting Anne Fritz (527.3575; email@example.com). The deadline to submit applications is 5:00 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 26. Grants will be awarded, at the discretion of the MBF Board of Directors, for law-related programs or projects that fulfill the Foundation’s mission to advocate and support public awareness of the legal profession; promote social justice; promote legal education; and recognize professionalism among members of the Bar. Last year, the MBF awarded over $43,000 in grants to 7 different organizations. In existence since 1981, the MBF was formed to be a vehicle for attorneys and others in the legal profession to give back to the community through tax deductible contributions.
MBA YLD Receives Top Honors at ABA Annual Meeting
The MBA Young Lawyers Division was awarded a prestigious Award of Achievement by the American Bar Association Young Lawyers Division at the ABA Annual Meeting in Toronto, Canada, on August 6th. The MBA YLD won first place in the category “Service to the Public” and were recognized for “outstanding activities and accomplishments during the 2010-2011 bar year.” Kyle M. Wiggins, 2010 MBA YLD President and chair of the public service program committee, and Stacie Winkler, a YLD Past President and a member of the public service program committee, accepted the award, which recognized the YLD’s work on the “They Had a Dream, Too-Essay Contest.” Congrats to all involved with the program for this outstanding accomplishment! U of M Pillars of Excellence Event, August 13
The Alumni Board of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law will host a Celebration of Excellence in the Law as they honor their 2011 Pillars of Excellence. The event will be held on Saturday, August 13th at the Holiday Inn, University of Memphis. The Cocktail Reception begins at 6 pm followed by Dinner and the Awards Program at 7 pm. Recipients include Leo Bearman, Jr., David E. Caywood, W.J. Michael Cody, Robert Green, John Paul Jones, Hon. Russel B. Sugarmon, and Friend of the Law School Charles Tuggle. The cost is $75 per person or $600 per table of eight. Class of 2011 Alumni may purchase tickets for $35 per person. For more information about the event, click here.
Coffee & Karate with Justice (Sensei) Holder!
A Wellness Committee of the MBA Supported Program
Justice Janice Holder (Sensei Holder) will continue her low-cost, low-key karate classes for attorneys, their support staff, family and friends with proceeds benefitting Memphis Area Legal Services.
The cost is $5.00 per person, per class; and the location is the ground floor of the 55 South Main Street Building, Memphis. 55 South Main Street is between Union and Monroe. Classes are from 7-8:00 AM and include coffee by Besso's (opening soon next door at 59 South Main Street). No prior experience is required. Wear comfortable clothing or yoga attire. The karate classes will consist of 15-20 minutes of stretching and warm-up and continue with the fundamentals of stances, blocks, punches and kicks. Sensei Holder has been a student of the American Combative Arts System and of Grandmaster Patrick Wrenn since 1989 and earned her black belt in October 1997. She has been an instructor of the American Combative Arts System for nine years, teaching karate to children at the System's Cordova and Harbor Town locations and to students at the Downtown Elementary School during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years. She currently is an assistant instructor at the System's Life Time Fitness location. Sensei Holder met the requirements for her second degree black belt in July 2003 and was promoted to third degree black belt in December 2005. In August 2002, Sensei Holder was honored by the Elvis Presley Memorial Martial Arts Hall of Fame for contributions to the community and to the martial arts.

Comment on Proposed Rule Changes by September 1
Recently the Tennessee Supreme Court has adopted amendments to rules or requested public comment on proposed rule changes. These include:
- The Court is considering an amendment to Rule 9, Section 20.2 to add a new exemption to the annual BPR registration fee for federal judges and other federal officials who are barred by federal law from practicing law. The comment deadline is Nov. 16.
- The Court has adopted an amended Rule 40A regarding the appointment of Guardians ad Litem. The amended rule takes effect Sept. 1 and will apply to all proceedings pending or filed after the effective date.
- The Court granted the petition of the Access to Justice Commission to adopt a set of legal forms and instructions for use in divorce cases that do not involve minor or dependent children and to approve these forms as universally acceptable as legally sufficient in all Tennessee courts. The effective date is Sept. 1.
- The Court is considering a new section 7 to Rule 13, which would authorize the AOC Director to enter into contracts with attorneys, law firms or associations of attorneys to provide legal services to indigent persons for a fixed fee. The comment deadline is Sept. 1.
- The Tennessee General Sessions Judges Conference has filed a petition asking the Court to approve a set of uniform civil case forms for use in all Tennessee General Sessions Courts. The comment deadline is Oct. 26.

Author of "The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen" To Speak at Rhodes, September 21
Internationally renowned Princeton philosopher Kwame Anthony Appiah will be lecturing at Rhodes College on the subject of his recent book, "The Honor Code: How Moral Revolutions Happen". Dr. Appiah will discuss his award-winning book on Wednesday, September 21, in McCallum Ballroom at 7:30pm. His lecture will be free and open to the public. The lecture is co-sponsored by the Rhodes College Office of Student Conduct, Phi Beta Kappa, the Dean's Office, and African American Studies, English, Gender and Sexuality Studies, International Studies, Philosophy, the Writing Center, and the Project for the Study of Liberal Democracy.
