Message from MBA President John Cannon
As the President of your organization, I am often asked to attend events sponsored by the Bar Association or by others. [Last Thursday], I had the occasion to attend two events which took me emotionally from one end of the spectrum to another. At lunch time, I attended the closing ceremony of the 2011 Summer Law Intern program at the Holiday Inn Hotel, University of Memphis. There was an overflow crowd of the high school students who were summer interns, their parents and other family members and friends, and representatives of the participating workplaces. The room was filled with enthusiasm, energy, and hopefulness. The interns expressed to me their appreciation for being exposed to the legal profession and the $500.00 check that each received. The parents expressed their gratitude to the Bar Association for sponsoring such a program so that their children can learn the responsibility that goes with having a job...At the end of the day, I was invited by Judge Donna Fields to come to the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality to introduce me to their facility and their needs. I did not know – and I bet you don’t either – what the Dorothy Day House of Hospitality is and what it does. I learned at this meeting that the Dorothy Day House is one of the few facilities in Shelby County that provides a place to stay that keeps homeless families together. Most shelters require that the family be separated particularly if there are boys over the age of six who must either go with relatives or into foster care. story continued here
