Our Condolences—Dean Jim Smoot

The MBA joins the University of Memphis Law School in mourning the loss of James “Jim” R. Smoot, Dean Emeritus and Professor of Law who passed away Tuesday, July 12th. A memorial service and reception to honor his many contributions to the law school and the greater legal community will be held Monday, August 8, with remarks beginning at 5 p.m. at the law school. We extend an invitation to the entire community to join President Raines, Dean Kevin Smith, the Law Alumni Chapter, and the University of Memphis family for the memorial service. Please join Dean Emeritus Smoot’s family and friends to remember his life and achievements.

YLD Triple Threat CLE & Happy Hour, July 21

The MBA Young Lawyers Division will host its next Triple Threat CLE & Happy Hour on July 21st. The seminar entitled "Behind the Judges' Chambers: From the Perspective of the Judicial Clerk" will feature a host of panelists who have served as clerks and will share their experiences in this capacity. Coffee & Karate with Justice (Sensei) Holder!

A Wellness Committee of the MBA Supported Program

Justice Janice Holder (Sensei Holder) will continue her low-cost, low-key karate classes for attorneys, their support staff, family and friends, during the month of July (and beyond, if there is sufficient interest). Proceeds from July Classes will benefit Memphis Area Legal Services.
     The cost is $5.00 per person, per class; and the location is the ground floor of the 55 South Main Street Building, Memphis. 55 South Main Street is between Union and Monroe. Classes are from 7-8:00 AM and include coffee by Besso's (opening soon next door at 59 South Main Street). No prior experience is required. Wear comfortable clothing or yoga attire. The karate classes will consist of 15-20 minutes of stretching and warm-up and continue with the fundamentals of stances, blocks, punches and kicks.       Sensei Holder has been a student of the American Combative Arts System and of Grandmaster Patrick Wrenn since 1989 and earned her black belt in October 1997. She has been an instructor of the American Combative Arts System for nine years, teaching karate to children at the System's Cordova and Harbor Town locations and to students at the Downtown Elementary School during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years. She currently is an assistant instructor at the System's Life Time Fitness location. Sensei Holder met the requirements for her second degree black belt in July 2003 and was promoted to third degree black belt in December 2005. In August 2002, Sensei Holder was honored by the Elvis Presley Memorial Martial Arts Hall of Fame for contributions to the community and to the martial arts.

Next Periaktos Movie Webcast, July 20

The Memphis Bar Association has partnered with Periaktos Productions, L.L.C., to present engaging movie webcasts. The second, entitled “Maxims, Monarchy and Sir Thomas More,” will be held on Wednesday, July 20th at 11:00 CDT and offers 3 hrs of Dual CLE credit. The seminar features Graham Thatcher as Sir Thomas More, a lawyer, statesman, philosopher, linguist, raconteur, Chancellor of England and author of Utopia who despite all that was beheaded by King Henry VIII in 1535 for high treason. The seminar consists of a film followed by a filmed panel discussion and then a Chat Room Discussion with a live Moderator, through which attendees can generate further questions and discussion about ethical issues in legal practice generated in the movie. The show explores conflicts between private conscience and public loyalty and ethical and moral decisions in legal practice. The registration fee is $159 for MBA members, $189 for non-MBA members and $139 for legal aid professionals.

Intro to Commercial Investment Real Estate Analysis, July 21-22

The CCIM (Certified Commercial Investment Member) Institute will present “CI Intro: Introduction to Commercial Investment Real Estate Analysis” in Memphis on Thursday, July 21 - Friday, July 22. The Alumni Board of the University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law invites you to a Celebration of Excellence in the Law as they honor their 2011 Pillars of Excellence.
