Pro Bono Reporting Increases

According to the BPR, 7,745 attorneys voluntarily reported pro bono information for 2010, an increase of more than 100% from the number of attorneys who reported for 2009. Of those reporting, 6,598 resided in Tennessee; the number includes 213 in-house and 286 government attorneys. They provided a total of 567,734 hours of pro bono service. In addition, 3,202 attorneys reported that they voluntarily contributed money to organizations that provide legal services.

Memphis Lawyers and Judges in the News

Danny Van Horn, an attorney with Butler Snow, became the 129th president of the Tennessee Bar Association at its Lawyers Luncheon on June 17. He promised a year of “All Access”, including access to justice, civics education, and professional development. In addition, Mason Wilson, an attorney with Baker Donelson Bearman Calwell & Berkowitz, became president of the TBA Young Lawyers Division.
     Criminal Court Judge James C. Beasley was elected president of the 183-member Tennessee Judicial Conference, which includes all state appellate and trial court judges. Beasley has served as a Criminal Court Judge since 1995. Prior to taking the bench, he served as an assistant district attorney general for 17 years. He earned both his bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Memphis.
     Elizabeth Collins, an attorney with Thomason Hendrix Harvey Johnson & Mitchell, has been appointed to the Tennessee Judicial Nominating Commission by Lt. Gov. Ron Ramsey. The 17-member commission nominates candidates for Tennessee judgeships to the governor. She is a past president of the YLD and currently serves on the MBA Board of Directors. She has an undergraduate degree from Millsaps College and earned her J.D. from the University of Memphis School of Law.

Coffee & Karate

A Wellness Committee of the MBA Supported Program

Justice Janice Holder (Sensei Holder) will continue her low-cost, low-key karate classes for attorneys, their support staff, family and friends, during the month of July(and beyond, if there is sufficient interest). Proceeds from July Classes will benefit Memphis Area Legal Services.
     The cost is $5.00 per person,per class; and the location is the ground floor of the 55 South Main StreetBuilding, Memphis. Classes are from 7-8:00 AM and include coffee by Besso’s(opening soon next door at 59 South Main Street). No prior experience isrequired. Wear comfortable clothing or yoga attire. The karate classes willconsist of 15-20 minutes of stretching and warm-up and continue with thefundamentals of stances, blocks, punches and kicks.
     Sensei Holder has been a student of theAmerican Combative Arts System and of Grandmaster Patrick Wrenn since 1989 andearned her black belt in October 1997. She has been an instructor of theAmerican Combative Arts System for nine years, teaching karate to children atthe System’s Cordova and Harbor Town locations and to students at the DowntownElementary School during the 2004-05 and 2005-06 academic years. She currentlyis an assistant instructor at the System’s Life Time Fitness location. SenseiHolder met the requirements for her second degree black belt in July 2003 andwas promoted to third degree black belt in December 2005. In August 2002,Sensei Holder was honored by the Elvis Presley Memorial Martial Arts Hall ofFame for contributions to the community and to the martial arts.
