Summer Intern Orientation is This Friday

The 2010 Summer Law Intern Program will officially kick off this Friday with an orientation at 11 a.m. in the Memphis City Council Chambers at City Hall. This year, 60 students have been placed in an internship with a local law firm or law office. Participants will begin their four-week internship with their assigned law office on Monday, June 7th.
An initiative by the Diversity Committee of the Memphis Bar Association, the High School Summer Law Intern Program was created in 2007 with the purpose of exposing minority high school students to the “real world” practice of law and encouraging them to consider law as a career. The students work at least 15 hours a week during the four-week period and receive a stipend upon successful completion of the program. In addition, the students participate in group activities, such as meeting the judges and learning about undergraduate and graduate admissions. In 2009, the MBA received an ABA Partnership Award in recognition of the program and its efforts to "increase the participation and advancement of lawyers of color in the organized bar and to attract students of color to the legal profession."
If you are interested in participating in the Summer Law Intern Program by hosting an intern at your law office or sponsoring an intern for an organization who cannot affort to pay the $500 stipend, please contact MBA Executive Director Anne Fritz at 527.3573 or afritz@memphisbar.org

Thank You to the MBA Blood Drive Donors!

During the two-day American Red Cross Blood Drive held last month at the MBA offices, 21 units of blood were collected with the potential of saving up to 3 lives in local hospitals. The impact of these donations is great, and we are very appreciative of the members who stopped by to donate during the drive. Thank you!

MBA Introduces Two New Sections!

The Memphis Bar Association is proud to announce the recent addition of two new sections—the Intellectual Property/Entertainment Law Section and the Government Lawyers Section.
The IP/Entertainment Law Section is chaired by William Parks of Wyatt Tarrant and Combs and hopes to not only bring together attorneys in these practice areas but also to provide the Memphis business community and the Mid-South region with a legal education resource, dedicated pro-bono group, and experts in these subject areas. To read more about this section, click here.
The Government Lawyers Section is chaired by Janet Shipman, an Assistant County Attorney with the Health Department, and hopes to serve as a resource for government attorneys, offering a venue for them to network and to discuss the unique challenges they face in their practices. To read more about this section, click here
To join these sections, contact the MBA office at 901.527.3573 or log in to www.memphisbar.org and select the section under “View/Edit Profile.”
