Tim DiScenza Named Court of the Judiciary’s New Chief Disciplinary Counsel

The Court of the Judiciary today named Timothy R. DiScenza as the new chief disciplinary counsel in charge of overseeing the ethical conduct of judges in Tennessee. Steve Daniel, who currently holds the position, will be stepping down as chief disciplinary counsel when his contract ends on June 30, 2010. Discenza has agreed to retain Patrick J. McHale as assistant disciplinary counsel, a position he has held since January 2009.
Earlier this week, DiScenza announced that he would retire from his position as a federal prosecutor, one that he has held for 33 years, at the end of this month. He will begin his work for the Court of the Judiciary on July 1.

New Government Lawyers Section Is Formed

In addition to the new IP/Entertainment Law Section, the MBA Board of Directors recently approved the formation of the Government Lawyers Section. As its name implies, it is designed to meet the needs of government attorneys—civil/criminal, federal, state and local—although any MBA member may join.
The section’s first “official” meeting will be held on June 9, 4:00 p.m., in the County Attorney’s Conference Room. All those interested in the section are invited to attend. And there’s a special deal for government lawyers who are not currently MBA members—$40 membership dues will cover their MBA and Government Lawyers Section membership for the rest of the year!
Click here to read more details about the new section. To join, call the MBA office at 901.527.3573 or log in to www.memphisbar.org and select the section under “View/Edit Profile.”

The MBA Proudly Introduces Its Intellectual Property / Entertainment Law Section

The Memphis area boasts a bevy of highly talented and accomplished practitioners in the entertainment and intellectual property law fields and multiple businesses and artists constantly needing counsel in these highly complex areas. As a result, the MBA has instituted the Intellectual Property and Entertainment Law Section.
A very strong and dedicated initial slate of officers and directors led by Bill Parks of Wyatt Tarrant & Combs is ready to promote not just the new IP/Entertainment Law Section throughout the MBA, but also to provide the Memphis business community and the Mid-South region with a legal education resource, a dedicated pro-bono group, and experts in these subject areas.
To continue reading about the section, click here. To join the section now, contact MBA Membership Coordinator Charlotte Gean at 901.527.3573 or ckgean@memphisbar.org, or log in to www.memphisbar.org and select the section under “View/Edit Profile.”

Summer Law Intern Program Needs You!

Over 50 law firms, government agencies, and corporate legal departments have committed to taking an intern through the Summer Law Intern Program. However, over 20 students are on a “wait list”, hoping that we can find additional places for them. The program runs from June 7 to July 2; an orientation will be held for the interns and workplaces on Friday, June 5. Interns are to work a total of 60 hours over that four-week period. While the interns can do clerical work, the goal of the program is to give them a taste of the “real world” practice of law. Participating workplaces are asked to take them to court, sit in on depositions, watch a business negotiation, etc. Group activities on Friday will introduce them to other aspects of the practice of law.
Upon successful completion of the internship, the interns receive a $500 stipend, which is paid by the workplace. However, some sponsorship money is available for firms and agencies that can take an intern, but can’t pay the stipend. If you are interested in participating in the Summer Law Intern Program, please contact MBA Executive Director Anne Fritz at 527.3573 or afritz@memphisbar.org
