Judge Williams to Be Off Bench
Judge Karen Williams of Circuit Court, Division III, will be off the bench for 6-9 weeks while she recuperates from rotator cuff surgery. If you have a matter set in Division III during that time, please check with her courtroom clerk, Kitty Bridges, or check the schedule outside her courtroom.
Notice for Practitioners in Bankruptcy Court
Per the Bankruptcy Court Clerk’s office, for Memphis cases only, the Official Form B23 must be filed as proof of completion of Personal Financial Management in all chapters. A scanned image of the certificate issued to the debtor is not required for Memphis cases, but may be included with the filing of the official form. If an attorney, in addition to filing the Official Form B23, wants to file a scanned image of the personal management certificate, it is preferred that it be uploaded as an attachment to the Official Form B23; however, it may be filed in each applicable case via a separate docket entry using the event code for Official Form B23.
Applications for Summer Law Intern Program Now Available
Now in its fourth year, the Summer Law Intern Program seeks to encourage minority high school students to consider law as a career by introducing them to the “real world” practice of law. Students accepted into the program will be placed with local law firms, corporate legal departments, and government agencies for a four-week period, June 7 to July 2. Group activities will let the interns interact with lawyers and judges and learn about financial aid and the college admissions process. Interns who successfully complete the program will receive a stipend at the end.

Attorney of the Day and Saturday Legal Clinic Schedule
YLD Happy Hour & Basketball Draft Tonight!
The MBA Young Lawyers Division will host its annual Happy Hour & Basketball Draft on Thursday, February 25th at Local Gastropub (95 S. Main St.). The Happy Hour begins at 5:30 pm with the draft for the YLD basketball league starting at 6 pm. The event is sponsored by Flying Paper. The YLD and Flying Paper will buy drinks for a short period of time.
CBHS to Present "12 Angry Men" This Weekend
The Christian Brothers High School Brothers on Stage will present “12 Angry Men” February 25-28th at 7:30 pm in the CBHS Auditorium. Advance tickets are $5. Tickets at the door are $7 and students are always $5. “12 Angry Men” presents a legal case that deliberates the guilt or innocence of a defendant on the basis of “reasonable doubt.” It’s a play about prejudices and preconceptions with one dissenting juror in a murder trial. AWA 2nd Annual Fashion Show, March 4
On Thursday, March 4th, the Association for Women Attorneys will host its 2nd Annual Fashion Show Night, featuring clothes and accessories from Shelton Clothiers and Lola Boutique modeled by local attorneys and judges. The event will be held at The Racquet Club (5111 Sanderlin Avenue). Drinks (cash bar) and hors d’oeuvres will be served starting at 5:30 pm with the show starting promptly at 7 pm. Tickets are $40 for AWA members and $45 for non-AWA members. Tables of 10 are $375. Seating is limited. Federalist Society Seminar, March 10
The Memphis Lawyers’ Chapter of the Federalist Society will present “Perspectives on the Second Amendment: The Potential Implications of Mcdonald v. City Of Chicago” featuring Alan Gura of Gura & Possessky, PLC, on Wednesday, March 10th from 11:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at The Majestic Grille (145 South Main St). The event costs $20 for Federalist Society Members, $25.00 for non-members. Lunch will be served from 11:30 am - 12 pm and the program will run from 12-1 pm. Law School Annual Diversity Outreach Program, March 11
The University of Memphis Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, the Law School Admissions Council and DiscoverlawMonth.org will host its Annual Diversity Outreach Program for high school and college students on March 11th from 6-8 p.m. at the Rose Theatre on the University of Memphis main campus. The annual event provides high school and college students information on career paths in law, what law school is really like, the law school admissions process, how to become a qualified candidate for law school and summer internship programs. Race Judicata 2010, April 10
The 5K Charity Run/Walk, sponsored by the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, will begin and end downtown at the park located at 51 N. Front St. Check-in starts at 8:30 a.m. Registration: $15 by March 20; $20 after March 20; $25 on race day. T-shirts will be guaranteed to all participants who register by March 20; and will be available on a first come, first served basis to those who register after March 20. Memphis to Host Final Round of National Mock Trial Tournament
Memphis has been selected to host the final round of the American Mock Trial Association’s 26th Annual National Intercollegiate Mock Trial Tournament on April 16-18, 2010. Memphis will be only the 4th city to host the finals. This is a great opportunity to showcase both Memphis and Tennessee to 500 of the most talented students in the nation. The competition will be held at both the Shelby County Courthouse and the Criminal Justice Center. Several judges are needed for the competition.
