Reception Tomorrow for the Tennessee Supreme Court

A reception for the Tennessee Supreme Court will be held at the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law, 1 N. Front St., in the 4th Floor Gordon Ball Reading Room, on Friday April 11, 2014, beginning at 7:30 a.m. The reception is being jointly hosted by the Cecil C. Humphreys School of Law and the Judges of the 30th Judicial District. Please RSVP to kcaraway@allensummers.com if you plan to attend.

Volunteers Needed for Legal Lines on Thurs. Apr. 17

Please consider volunteering to work a 30-minute shift between 4:00 and 6:30 pm on Thursday, April 17th to answer the public’s legal questions over the phone during Legal Lines, a legal help call-in program, on WREG Ch. 3. Sponsored by the MBA Young Lawyers Division, volunteers can expect to answer the simplest of legal questions and will be given a list of resources to provide callers who they cannot assist over the phone. If you are camera shy, the 5:30-6:00 pm shift will not be televised as the station will broadcast the national news during that time. Volunteers will need to be on hand at WREG Studios located on Channel 3 Drive, just off Riverside Drive in downtown Memphis. Change for This Week's Saturday Legal Clinic

Just this week, the Saturday Legal Clinic will be held on the third floor. Volunteers can still use the side door and go thru the foyer into the lobby, then up the elevators to the third floor. The SLC will return to its usual spot in May. Thank you to every attorney who volunteers to make the Saturday Legal Clinic possible. 

Applicants Sought for Court of Appeals

Applicants are being accepted for the position on the Court of Appeals, Western Section, being vacated by the elevation of Judge Holly Kirby to the Supreme Court.  Applicants must reside in the Western Grand Division; the application deadline is April 30.  A hearing will be held in Memphis on May 16. Register Now for Bench Bar, Now With a Beach Carnival

The Bench Bar Committee is proud to announce a new addition to the Bench Bar line-up – the first ever Bench Bar Beach Carnival! The event will be held on Friday afternoon, May 9, 2014 starting at 3:30 pm. The beach carnival will bring out the kid in everyone as the sound of laughter and games fill the ocean air. Kids of all ages can enjoy face painting, balloon animals, and beach crafts. There will also be a sandcastle building contest and a buried treasure hunt right on the beach.  You won’t find any better entertainment on the beach for the whole family! 

Also, BankTennessee, one of the MBA’s long-time partners, wants to encourage more young lawyers to attend the Bench Bar Conference, which will be held May 7-10 at Tops’l Beach Resort in Destin, Florida. To that end, they are providing an incentive for young lawyers who have never attended a Bench Bar Conference. Here’s how it works: Young lawyers (5 years of practice or less) who will be first-time attendees at this year’s Conference and who register for the Conference by Friday, April 18 will be entered in a drawing to receive $100 off the registration fee. Five $100 awards will be given. If you have any questions, please contact Lesia Beach (lbeach@memphisbar.org) or Anne Fritz (afritz@memphisbar.org). Our thanks to BankTennessee for offering this incentive!

Luncheon to Honor Criminal Court Judge Chris Craft on Mon. Apr. 21

Judge Chris Craft will receive the 2014 Dunavant Public Service Award in the elected official category at a luncheon on Monday, April 21, 11:30 am, at the University of Memphis Holiday Inn. U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander will deliver the keynote address. Sponsored by the Rotary Club of East Memphis, the Dunavant Awards recognize outstanding career service by one elected and one non-elected public servant in Shelby County. They are named in memory of former Probate Court Clerk Bobby Dunavant, who was widely acclaimed as a humble and outstanding civil servant.  Luncheon tickets are $50 for an individual; $400 for a table of 10. Law Week 2014 will get rolling Friday, April 25th with the 7th Annual Law Week Launch Party in Court Square from 5-7 pm.
